A Beginner’s Guide to WordPress

There was once a time when WordPress was only used for individuals across the globe to create blogging websites; the perfect location to vent their thoughts on a wide variety of topics. Although many WordPress websites are still used for blogging, it is now possible to create some very impressive website designs, without needing to know how to write elaborate code.

Perhaps you yourself have heard of the WordPress content management system (CMS), and are interested in learning a little more about how a website design created using this system fits together. This brief beginner’s introduction will help you to start to understand some of the concepts that you will become intimately familiar with as you create more websites.

Installation

Before your company Website Design can appear live on the internet for the world to see, you will need to install WordPress onto your hosting account. Fortunately the majority of website hosting companies make this very simple, by allowing easy one click installation of the system to your domain name. Look out for a logo in your website control panel named ‘Fantastico’, one of the most common software installation packages on website hosting, and you will be guided quickly through the process by on screen instructions.

If you can’t find Fantastico, or any other icon that appears to be a software installation link, simply contact your hosting company’s support line who will either guide you through the process, or simply install WordPress for you.

Themes

One of the reasons that the WordPress CMS is particularly powerful is due to the many different themes on offer that can be plugged into your website design, without the need for any coding whatsoever. A quick Google search for ‘WordPress themes’ will return thousands of potentials that you can use to improve the appearance and overall presentation of your site.

Once you have found a theme you like, simply upload it to your website and activate it in the Appearance settings within the WordPress backend of your site.

Plugins

Along with a vast number of potential themes, you could also benefit from the many plugins on offer. These plugins can do a range of different things for you, such as displaying your images in an attractive way, allowing a Flash game to appear in your sidebar, or even improving your search engine optimisation.

WordPress plugins can be installed straight through the backend of your installation, simply by clicking on Plugins in the navigation menu and searching for what you require.

Pages and Posts

A WordPress website design is created of a variety of pages and posts. Both pages and posts can be easily amended from the Admin panel, and both can be linked hierarchically. In the case of pages, other pages can be created as subpages from an initial one should you wish to categorise your content. Likewise, in the case of posts, categories and subcategories can be created in which your posts can exist.

As a general rule of thumb, pages will be linked to from your website’s navigation bar, whereas posts will be used to update the content on those pages.

Conclusion

This information has been a very brief introduction to some aspects of the WordPress CMS. Much more information can be found online, however perhaps the best way to learn is simply to install WordPress on your own website hosting to have a play for yourself.
