Choosing Your Website Hosting Package
If you want the world to have access to your website design you will need some sort of website hosting package. Hosting packages do cost money, although the amount varies considerably, but it is an expense without which your website would fail to operate.
With so many different companies advertising website hosting though, it can be difficult to know where to look. Enter ‘website hosting’ into Google and you may be startled by the quantity of results that are returned. While not all of them will be offering you a hosting package there are many thousands that will be, and this can make it hard to know where to look to discover the best service.
If you don’t know where to turn for your website hosting, follow this quick three step strategy to help you to find the best value for money from your hosting.
Step one – identify your hosting needs
It is important to know what you want before spending your money on anything, and the same goes for your website hosting package. Answering the following questions in your own mind will make your hunt for hosting much easier:
- What is the most you can afford to spend per month on your website hosting? The prices of different hosting companies may vary from next to nothing up to hundreds of pounds a month depending on the service that you require, so consider how much you can afford
- Are you technically minded or is a great technical support line very important to you? Would you know how to place your website design on your hosting package? If not, you may need to look for a service with a reputably good technical support line.
- Would your website suffer drastically if it lost connection for a few minutes or hours every now and then? Reliability differs between different hosting companies (usually according to cost) so this is a very real consideration.
- Are you setting up one website or several? You may need to look for a package that provides the ability to host several domain names.
- Will you be putting any large files on your website for download? A fast bandwidth and additional storage space could be needed. You may need to pay more for them so identify whether they are needed at this early stage.
Step two – look for different hosting companies
The first hosting package that you see may look great, but ensure that you have a look at some additional companies and offers to see if there is anything better available.
Many website designers have written reviews about their own hosting companies or others that they have encountered. Why not take advantage of this knowledge and search for some reviews of any companies that you are considering. It could help you to find a great service quickly, particularly if you keep your eyes open for those things that you deemed important in step one.
Step three – give your provider a go
Just because you sign up to one hosting company does not mean that you need to stay with them for the rest of your life on the internet. The majority of companies won’t tie you in to a long contract, so if you are unhappy with the service that you receive you will be free to move your website design to another company.
