Could a Content Management System Help to Keep Your Website Content Current?

Finding an out of date website when you are desperately seeking up to date information is a very frustrating experience. How many websites have you seen boasting a ‘Latest News’ section that was last updated in 1996? It doesn’t inspire much confidence in a company if they can’t even keep their website up to date with the latest information. Many websites suffer from this problem because of a lack of forward thinking on their part when the pages were originally launched on the internet. With content hardcoded into the design of their website and no employees with the expertise to fix it, the website was bound to gradually slip out of date.

Some surveys today insist that a website that isn’t current could actually do more damage to a business than if they hadn’t bothered to create a website at all. How often do you update your own content? Are your contact details up to date? Would a visitor be able to discover current and relevant information should they stumble upon your homepage?

If your own website design is mournfully out of date, or if you simply struggle to easily make the relevant updates that are required, there is a solution that could drastically help. A content management system, or CMS, could help you to stay on top of your updates, making it much easier to add new content or removed older information. Instead of relying on your website designer to update the content for you, you can do it for yourself, as simply as editing a Microsoft Word document. A website designed with a CMS will provide a secure login for you to access the backend of your website, allowing you to simply and easily make any updates.

There are more benefits to be reaped than the simple ease of updateability though as can be seen here:

-       Using a CMS for your website design will force your pages to look similar, helping visitors to know exactly where to look for the information on each and every page.

-       You will be able to add fancy functionality without needing to learn how to write programming code, as many systems offer many different plugins for many different occasions.

-       If you run a large website you may need to have several people keep it current. Your CMS will be able to inform you exactly who has made any changes to what and when they did so.

There are several different content management systems to choose from, such as the three better known solutions WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. It is possible to set up a website complete with a CMS with little to no experience in website design, but if you would rather hand the job to a professional simply inform your developer that you require some form of content management for your pages. They may even offer to instruct you as to how you can keep your website completely up to date at all times, allowing you to reap the benefits of current content.
