Your Guide to Effective Font Use in Website Design
Have you considered your choice of font within your website design? It is an often forgotten consideration that can actually have a large effect on the success (or lack of it) of your website. Your choice of font will affect how well your visitors can read the information that you provide, which will in turn affect how likely they are to make a purchase or enquiry from you, or even to return in the future.
Using fonts correctly within your website design is an issue that is easy to get right when you give it the attention it is due. To help you to make wise choices regarding the fonts on your own pages, pay attention to the following advice.
Choosing the best font size
When it comes to selecting the best size for the text on your page there isn’t a simple answer as it will depend, in part, upon the overall design of your website. You will need to take some time to experiment with different sizes, while always remembering that it is important that your content can be read by all. That means people with excellent vision, and people without.
To help the matter further you should refrain from using absolute text size values. If you use CSS to define your font size, it will provide the ability for you to specify how large or small the text will be according to a percentage instead of an absolute value. This allows your visitors to take advantage of the inbuilt functionality within their own internet browsers to adjust the size of the font to a level that suits them.
Choosing the best font types
The next choice in managing your fonts correctly is to choose the best font type for your website. You must have seen hundreds, if not thousands, of websites in your own life. How many times have you stopped and taken notice of the font? Probably not often, except in those instances where it is really difficult to read. A suitably chosen typeface is not supposed to be noticed; its role is to silently reflect the company or organisation in that a professional and clear font will portray the professionalism of your company.
It is important to remember that you may see a font on the website on your own computer differently to others if it is a font that you have installed but that they may not. Stick to the safe bets of fonts that are well recognised in all the major browsers, such as Lucida Console, Arial and Verdana.
Choosing the best font colour
Some websites can make you cringe due to their choices of colour. Bright red text over a dark blue background, for example, would be almost impossible to read without putting a strain on your eyes. Ensure that the colour of your text contrasts with the colour of your background so that it can be clearly read.
Occasionally you may wish to bring attention to certain words or phrases within your content. In this case choose one other colour that can still be read against your background and use only this colour for your highlighting. It should be a different colour to that of any links that your visitors can follow to avoid confusion.
Choosing the best font attributes
Never underestimate the effect of making one word of phrase appear in a bold text, or perhaps displayed in italics. The difference from the rest of the text on a page can really grab the eye of your visitor, directing them to the all important information. However, ensure that you don’t overuse this emphasis, keeping it to a maximum of a few words or phrases on every page to help your customers to enjoy your website without putting them off.
